A name to foster a thirst for learning
At its last meeting, the Prévessin-Moëns municipal council approved the name for its new primary school, which will open in September with 7 or 8 classes, before eventually expanding to 12 or 13 classes.
An ambitious name
The fourth state primary school in Prévessin-Moëns will be called the “ALICE” school, a tribute to CERN’s ALICE experiment, which is contributing to a better understanding of the origin of the universe. The municipal council wants to introduce the school’s children to the research carried out and the discoveries made at CERN, to familiarise them with the Organization’s scientific advances and to bring them closer to their mysterious and intriguing neighbour, some of whose installations are located within the commune of Prévessin-Moëns itself. Knowledge begins with wonder, which invites investigation and research. A thirst for learning and a desire to understand the world around us can begin at an early age and be applied to all subjects.
A name with two meanings
The ALICE school will also no doubt bring to mind Alice in Wonderland... She too was amazed by her discoveries and transported to the boundary between dreams and reality.
What’s more, the choice of a female name for the school is a forward-thinking decision that mirrors the appointment of CERN’s first female Director-General.
We wish the ALICE school all the best and hope its pupils derive much pleasure from their discoveries!
