As part of CERN’s mission, researchers push the frontiers of science and technology for the benefit of all. Within healthcare, this translates into applications such as medical diagnostics and imaging, therapy, and dosimetry, as well as digital technologies for health applications.
CERN’s contribution to medical innovation often involves the participation of local institutions, such as the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), which is aiming to build a new FLASH radiotherapy centre capable of treating large, deep tumours using CERN technologies. In parallel, the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), together with CHUV, take part in CERN’s Medicis collaboration, a prime example of accelerator technology being harnessed in the fight against cancer. In addition, CERN’s business incubation centres, such as Park Innovaare in Switzerland and InnoGEX in France, offer support to local startups, spin-offs and small businesses that are contributing to the implementation of CERN technologies in other fields, including healthcare. That is the case of the startups Picotech, XRnanotech and Terapet.
Such initiatives, together with other topics across the theme, will be discussed in the Sparks! The main course of the Sparks! Serendipity Forum is an innovative CERN forum event in which 50 participants with different areas of expertise are led through a full day of plenaries, discussions and breakout sessions. The aim is to spark discussions about the future of health and its consequences for society. Guests are actively encouraged to make lasting multidisciplinary connections throughout the Forum.
The second edition of Sparks! was launched at the end of October with the second series of the CERN Sparks! Podcasts. The podcasts will be followed by the Sparks! Talks event and the Serendipity Forum on 17 and 18 November.
