CERN and the local authorities in its two Host States have applied to host a stage of the Tour de France in 2029, the year of CERN’s 75th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the invention of the World Wide Web.

The bid is being submitted by CERN in association with the Geneva cantonal authorities, the Département de l’Ain, the Communauté d’agglomération du Pays de Gex and the Ville de Meyrin. CERN Director-General Mark Thomson signed the official application letter, together with Thierry Apothéloz (State Councillor of the Canton of Geneva), Damien Boccard (Administrative Councillor of Meyrin), Jean Deguerry (President of the Département de l’Ain) and Patrice Dunand (President of the Communauté d’agglomération du Pays de Gex).

CERN and its partners are proposing a unique cross-border route through the Canton of Geneva and the Ain department, starting at the Science Gateway and passing through the Pays de Gex and the commune of Meyrin. Beyond being a sporting competition, the Tour de France embodies CERN’s values of transcending borders and boundaries, bringing cultures together and sharing knowledge.

By bringing one of the world’s most popular sporting competitions into contact with the world of scientific excellence, CERN aims to create a unifying and festive event that is open to all. Activities, scientific discoveries and celebrations will enrich this experience for the general public.

Supported by the local French and Swiss authorities, this bid draws on CERN’s recognised expertise in organising international events. In 2029, science and sport could collide to create an unforgettable stage of the Tour de France, in the heart of Europe.

The Tour de France organising committee will study CERN’s bid and give its answer by June 2028.
